Numbers 29

1“‘On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a holy assembly; you must do no ordinary work. It is to be a day of sounding the signal for you. 2Offer a burnt offering as a pleasing aroma to Yahweh: one young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old, without defect. 3Their grain offering is fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for the bull, two-tenths for the ram, 4and a tenth of an ephah for each of the seven lambs; 5also one male goat as a purification offering, to make atonement for you. 6These are in addition to the monthly burnt offering and its grain offering, and the regular burnt offering and its grain offering, with their drink offerings as prescribed, a pleasing aroma, an offering by fire to Yahweh.

7“‘On the tenth day of this seventh month you are to have a holy assembly, and you must afflict yourselves. You must do no work at all. 8Present a burnt offering to Yahweh, a pleasing aroma: one young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old. They must be without defect. 9Their grain offering is fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for the bull, two-tenths for the ram, 10and a tenth of an ephah for each of the seven lambs; 11also one male goat as a purification offering, in addition to the purification offering of atonement and the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and their drink offerings.

12“‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh month you are to have a holy assembly; you must do no ordinary work. Celebrate a festival to Yahweh for seven days. 13Present a burnt offering, an offering by fire, a pleasing aroma to Yahweh: thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old. They must be without defect. 14Their grain offering is fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for each of the thirteen bulls, two-tenths for each of the two rams, 15and a tenth of an ephah for each of the fourteen lambs; 16also one male goat as a purification offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

17“‘On the second day, offer twelve young bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old, without defect, 18with their grain offerings and their drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number, as prescribed; 19also one male goat as a purification offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and their drink offerings.

20“‘On the third day, offer eleven bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old, without defect, 21with their grain offerings and their drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number, as prescribed; 22also one male goat as a purification offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offering.

23“‘On the fourth day, offer ten bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old, without defect, 24with their grain offerings and their drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number, as prescribed; 25also one male goat as a purification offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

26“‘On the fifth day, offer nine bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old, without defect, 27with their grain offerings and their drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number, as prescribed; 28also one male goat as a purification offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offering.

29“‘On the sixth day, offer eight bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old, without defect, 30with their grain offerings and their drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number, as prescribed; 31also one male goat as a purification offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offerings.

32“‘On the seventh day, offer seven bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old, without defect, 33with their grain offerings and their drink offerings for the bulls, the rams, and the lambs, according to their number, as prescribed for them; 34also one male goat as a purification offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

35“‘On the eighth day you are to hold a solemn assembly; you must do no ordinary work. 36Present a burnt offering, an offering by fire, a pleasing aroma to Yahweh: one bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old, without defect, 37with their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bull, the ram, and the lambs, according to their number, as prescribed; 38also one male goat as a purification offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offering. 39Present these to Yahweh at your appointed times, in addition to your vows and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings, and peace offerings.’” 40Moses told the sons of Israel everything Yahweh had commanded Moses.

Translation notes 4

29:1–6 — Signal day. The word translated “sounding the signal” denotes an acclamation or alarm and is associated with trumpet or horn blasts, but this verse does not name the instrument. The first day of the month carries both its monthly offerings and these additional offerings, besides the daily offering.

29:7–11 — Affliction and atonement. “Afflict yourselves” preserves the expression used for the Day of Atonement; fasting is associated with it in wider biblical usage, but this verse does not list all its practices. Its prohibition covers all work, a broader expression than “ordinary work.” The listed goat supplements the purification offering belonging to the atonement rites; it does not replace that offering.

29:12–34 — Seven days of offerings. The bulls decrease from thirteen to seven over seven days, totaling seventy. Two rams, fourteen year-old male lambs, and a male goat recur each day. Every day's list and the repeated additions to the regular offering are retained. The grain and drink offerings are prescribed in relation to the kinds and numbers of animals.

29:35–40 — Eighth day; numbering. The eighth day's solemn assembly has its own smaller animal list. Verse 39 distinguishes appointed offerings from those connected with vows and voluntary gifts. English 29:40 corresponds to Hebrew 30:1; English chapter 30 therefore begins at Hebrew 30:2. Nothing is dropped at the boundary.
