Numbers 15

1Yahweh spoke to Moses:

2“Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them: When you enter the land where you will live, which I am giving you,

3and you make an offering by fire to Yahweh from the herd or flock, a burnt offering or a sacrifice to fulfill a special vow, as a freewill offering, or at your appointed festivals, making a pleasing aroma for Yahweh,

4the one presenting his offering to Yahweh is to present a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a quarter of a hin of oil.

5Prepare a quarter of a hin of wine as a drink offering with the burnt offering or sacrifice for each male lamb.

6For a ram, prepare a grain offering of two tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a third of a hin of oil.

7Present a third of a hin of wine as a drink offering, a pleasing aroma for Yahweh.

8When you prepare a young bull as a burnt offering or sacrifice, to fulfill a special vow or as peace offerings to Yahweh,

9present with the young bull a grain offering of three tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with half a hin of oil.

10Present half a hin of wine as a drink offering, an offering by fire, a pleasing aroma for Yahweh.

11This is what is to be done for each bull, ram, or animal from the sheep or goats.

12Whatever number you prepare, do this for each one according to their number.

13Every native is to do these things this way when presenting an offering by fire, a pleasing aroma for Yahweh.

14If a resident foreigner lives with you, or anyone is among you throughout your generations, and presents an offering by fire, a pleasing aroma for Yahweh, he is to do as you do.

15Assembly, there shall be one statute for you and for the foreigner residing with you, a lasting statute throughout your generations. You and the resident foreigner shall be alike before Yahweh.

16There shall be one instruction and one ordinance for you and for the foreigner residing with you.”

17Yahweh spoke to Moses:

18“Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them: When you enter the land to which I am bringing you,

19and eat the bread of the land, you are to set aside a contribution for Yahweh.

20From the first of your dough, set aside a ring-shaped loaf as a contribution. Set it aside like a contribution from the threshing floor.

21From the first of your dough you are to give a contribution to Yahweh throughout your generations.

22“When you go astray and do not carry out all these commandments that Yahweh has spoken to Moses,

23everything Yahweh commanded you through Moses, from the day Yahweh gave the command and onward throughout your generations,

24if it was done unintentionally, out of the congregation’s sight, the whole congregation is to offer one young bull as a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma for Yahweh, with its prescribed grain offering and drink offering, and one male goat as a purification offering.

25The priest is to make atonement for the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, and they shall be forgiven, because it was unintentional and they have brought their offering, an offering by fire to Yahweh, and their purification offering before Yahweh for their unintentional error.

26The whole congregation of the sons of Israel and the foreigner residing among them shall be forgiven, because all the people were involved in the unintentional error.

27“If one person sins unintentionally, that person is to present a year-old female goat as a purification offering.

28The priest is to make atonement before Yahweh for the person who went astray by sinning unintentionally. When atonement is made for that person, that person shall be forgiven.

29For the native among the sons of Israel and the foreigner residing among them, you shall have one instruction for anyone acting unintentionally.

30But the person who acts with a high hand, native or resident foreigner, reviles Yahweh. That person shall be cut off from among their people.

31Because that person despised Yahweh’s word and broke his commandment, that person shall certainly be cut off; their guilt remains on them.”

32While the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day.

33Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation.

34They put him in custody because it had not been made clear what should be done to him.

35Yahweh said to Moses, “The man must be put to death. The whole congregation is to stone him outside the camp.”

36The whole congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

37Yahweh said to Moses:

38“Speak to the sons of Israel and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a blue cord on each corner’s tassel.

39It shall be a tassel for you to look at, so that you remember all Yahweh’s commandments and do them, rather than scout after your own hearts and eyes, after which you prostitute yourselves.

40Then you will remember and do all my commandments and be holy to your God.

41I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am Yahweh your God.”

Translation notes 4

15:4–12 — Measures. “A tenth” is a tenth of an ephah of dry measure; “of an ephah” makes the implied unit explicit. A hin is a liquid measure. The amounts rise from a lamb to a ram to a bull and apply to each animal individually.

15:22–31 — Unintentional and high-handed acts. The chapter distinguishes unintentional failure from acting “with a high hand,” openly defying Yahweh’s word. The latter is more specific than every act done with awareness. “Cut off” and continuing guilt remain explicit; the passage gives no substitute sacrifice for that case.

15:32–36 — Sabbath execution. The man is held until Yahweh’s ruling, then the congregation stones him outside the camp. The severity and the named actors are retained without an added motive or an invented prior warning.

15:38–41 — Tassels and remembering. The tassel’s blue cord serves as a visible reminder. “Scout after” uses the same Hebrew root as the scouts’ exploration in chapters 13–14. The prostitution image concerns going after one’s own heart and eyes; it is retained rather than softened to mere distraction.
