Luke 22
1The Festival of Unleavened Bread, called Passover, was drawing near. 2The chief priests and scribes were seeking how to kill him, for they feared the people. 3Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. 4He went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might hand him over to them. 5They were glad and agreed to give him money. 6He consented and sought an opportunity to hand him over to them away from the crowd.
7The day of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover sacrifice had to be offered. 8He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us to eat.” 9They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare it?” 10He said to them, “Look, when you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. 11Say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you: Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12He will show you a large furnished upstairs room. Prepare it there.” 13They went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
14When the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him. 15He said to them, “I have intensely desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you, I will certainly not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17He took a cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 18For I tell you, from now on I will certainly not drink from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20Likewise, after supper, he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you. 21But look, the hand of the one handing me over is with me on the table. 22For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that person through whom he is handed over!” 23They began to discuss among themselves which of them it could be who was about to do this.
24A dispute also arose among them about which of them was considered greatest. 25He said to them, “The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. 26But you must not be like that. Let the greatest among you become like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves. 27For who is greater: the one reclining at the table or the one serving? Is it not the one reclining? But I am among you as one who serves. 28You are those who have remained with me in my trials. 29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31“Simon, Simon, look, Satan demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat. 32But I prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” 33He said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” 34He said, “I tell you, Peter, a rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me.”
35He said to them, “When I sent you without a money bag, travel bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money bag should take it, and likewise a travel bag. Whoever does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. 37For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was counted with the lawless.’ For what concerns me is reaching its fulfillment.” 38They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” He said to them, “It is enough.”
39He went out and, as was his custom, went to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray that you do not enter into temptation.” 41He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed, 42saying, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet let not my will but yours be done.” 43An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 44In anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like clots of blood falling to the ground. 45Rising from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping from grief. 46He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation.”
47While he was still speaking, look, a crowd came. The one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them, and he approached Jesus to kiss him. 48Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you handing over the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49When those around him saw what was about to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with a sword?” 50One of them struck the high priest's slave and cut off his right ear. 51But Jesus said, “Allow no more of this!” He touched the ear and healed him. 52Jesus said to the chief priests, temple officers, and elders who had come against him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as against a robber? 53When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the authority of darkness.”
54They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. Peter followed at a distance. 55They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. 56A slave woman saw him sitting in the light, looked intently at him, and said, “This man too was with him.” 57But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58A little later someone else saw him and said, “You too are one of them.” Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59About an hour later, another insisted, “Certainly this man was with him too, for he is a Galilean.” 60Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the Lord's word, how he had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” 62He went outside and wept bitterly.
63The men holding him mocked and beat him. 64They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, “Prophesy! Who struck you?” 65They said many other things against him, blaspheming.
66When day came, the council of elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered and led him into their council. 67They said, “If you are the Messiah, tell us.” He said to them, “If I tell you, you will certainly not believe; 68and if I question you, you will certainly not answer. 69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70They all said, “Then you are the Son of God?” He said to them, “You say that I am.” 71They said, “What further testimony do we need? We ourselves have heard it from his mouth.”
