Genesis 5

1This is the written record of Adam's generations. When God created humankind, he made it in God's likeness. 2Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Humankind when they were created. 3Adam lived 130 years and fathered a son in his likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. 4After fathering Seth, Adam's days were 800 years, and he fathered sons and daughters. 5All the days Adam lived were 930 years; then he died.

6Seth lived 105 years and fathered Enosh. 7After fathering Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and fathered sons and daughters. 8All Seth's days were 912 years; then he died. 9Enosh lived 90 years and fathered Kenan. 10After fathering Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and fathered sons and daughters. 11All Enosh's days were 905 years; then he died. 12Kenan lived 70 years and fathered Mahalalel. 13After fathering Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and fathered sons and daughters. 14All Kenan's days were 910 years; then he died.

15Mahalalel lived 65 years and fathered Jared. 16After fathering Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and fathered sons and daughters. 17All Mahalalel's days were 895 years; then he died. 18Jared lived 162 years and fathered Enoch. 19After fathering Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and fathered sons and daughters. 20All Jared's days were 962 years; then he died. 21Enoch lived 65 years and fathered Methuselah. 22After fathering Methuselah, Enoch walked with God for 300 years and fathered sons and daughters. 23All Enoch's days were 365 years. 24Enoch walked with God; then he was no longer there, because God took him.

25Methuselah lived 187 years and fathered Lamech. 26After fathering Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and fathered sons and daughters. 27All Methuselah's days were 969 years; then he died. 28Lamech lived 182 years and fathered a son. 29He named him Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us in our work and in the painful labor of our hands, from the ground that Yahweh cursed.” 30After fathering Noah, Lamech lived 595 years and fathered sons and daughters. 31All Lamech's days were 777 years; then he died. 32Noah was 500 years old, and Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Translation notes 4

5:1–3 — Adam; humankind. The same Hebrew word can name the individual Adam and humanity collectively. Verse 2 expressly applies it to male and female. The likeness and image language connecting Adam and Seth echoes chapter 1 without replacing either statement.

5:3–32 — Ages. The stated ages and totals follow the pinned Masoretic Hebrew. Other ancient textual traditions transmit different genealogical numbers; this draft does not combine their chronologies. The repeated notices of fathering, sons and daughters, totals, and death are retained without explaining the unusual lifespans away.

5:22–24 — Enoch. Walking with God describes Enoch's relationship and conduct. The text says that God took him and omits the usual death notice; it does not narrate the manner or destination. Later accounts are not supplied here.

5:29–32 — Noah. The naming explanation links Noah with the sound of the verb for comfort, while the name itself is associated with rest. “From the ground” attaches the hardship to the cursed ground. Verse 32 does not say that all three sons were born in Noah's five-hundredth year or fix their order of birth.
