Genesis 36

1These are the generations of Esau, that is, Edom. 2Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite; Oholibamah daughter of Anah, daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; 3and Basemath daughter of Ishmael, sister of Nebaioth. 4Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel. 5Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These were Esau's sons who were born to him in the land of Canaan. 6Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, all the people of his household, his livestock, all his animals, and all the property he had acquired in the land of Canaan. He went to another land, away from his brother Jacob, 7because their possessions were too great for them to live together. The land where they lived as foreigners could not support them because of their livestock. 8So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir. Esau is Edom.

9These are the generations of Esau, the father of Edom, in the hill country of Seir. 10These are the names of Esau's sons: Eliphaz, son of Esau's wife Adah, and Reuel, son of Esau's wife Basemath. 11Eliphaz's sons were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. 12Timna was a concubine of Esau's son Eliphaz, and she bore Amalek to Eliphaz. These were the sons of Esau's wife Adah. 13These were Reuel's sons: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Esau's wife Basemath. 14These were the sons of Esau's wife Oholibamah daughter of Anah, daughter of Zibeon: she bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah to Esau.

15These were the chiefs among Esau's sons. The sons of Eliphaz, Esau's firstborn: Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz, 16Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek. These were the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these were Adah's sons. 17These were the sons of Esau's son Reuel: Chief Nahath, Chief Zerah, Chief Shammah, and Chief Mizzah. These were the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Esau's wife Basemath. 18These were the sons of Esau's wife Oholibamah: Chief Jeush, Chief Jalam, and Chief Korah. These were the chiefs of Esau's wife Oholibamah daughter of Anah. 19These were Esau's sons, and these were their chiefs. He is Edom.

20These were the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the Horite chiefs, the sons of Seir, in the land of Edom. 22Lotan's sons were Hori and Hemam, and Lotan's sister was Timna. 23These were Shobal's sons: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. 24These were Zibeon's sons: Aiah and Anah. This was the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness while tending the donkeys of his father Zibeon. 25These were Anah's children: Dishon and Oholibamah daughter of Anah. 26These were Dishan's sons: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. 27These were Ezer's sons: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. 28These were Dishan's sons: Uz and Aran. 29These were the Horite chiefs: Chief Lotan, Chief Shobal, Chief Zibeon, Chief Anah, 30Chief Dishon, Chief Ezer, and Chief Dishan. These were the Horite chiefs, according to their chieftainships, in the land of Seir.

31These were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before a king reigned over the sons of Israel. 32Bela son of Beor reigned in Edom, and his city's name was Dinhabah. 33Bela died, and Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah reigned in his place. 34Jobab died, and Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. 35Husham died, and Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the territory of Moab, reigned in his place. His city's name was Avith. 36Hadad died, and Samlah from Masrekah reigned in his place. 37Samlah died, and Shaul from Rehoboth on the River reigned in his place. 38Shaul died, and Baal-hanan son of Achbor reigned in his place. 39Baal-hanan son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place. His city's name was Pau, and his wife's name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, daughter of Me-zahab.

40These were the names of Esau's chiefs, according to their clans and their places, by their names: Chief Timna, Chief Alvah, Chief Jetheth, 41Chief Oholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon, 42Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar, 43Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom according to their settlements in the land they possessed. This is Esau, the father of Edom.

Translation notes 5

36:2–3 — Esau's wives. The names and parentage here differ from the earlier notices in 26:34 and 28:9. The translation preserves each passage's wording without supplying unreported alternate names. “Daughter of Zibeon” in 36:2 and 14 can describe a female descendant; some witnesses instead make Anah the son of Zibeon.

36:5, 14 — Jeush. The traditional reading Jeush is used in these two verses, where the written spelling differs. The name is also written with the Jeush spelling in verse 18.

36:15–19 — Chiefs. The repeated title can describe clan leaders or the clans associated with them. Korah appears in both Eliphaz's and Oholibamah's lists; the repetition is retained.

36:24 — Hot springs. The Hebrew term is rare and uncertain. “Mules” is an old alternative interpretation, but the translation uses the contextual understanding “hot springs.”

36:26, 39 — Names as transmitted. Verse 26 spells the father's name Dishan, while verse 25 has Dishon. Hadar in verse 39 is called Hadad in the parallel list in 1 Chronicles. The translation does not silently make the lists identical.
