Genesis 34
1Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to see the women of the land. 2Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. He took her, lay with her, and violated her. 3His whole being clung to Dinah, Jacob's daughter. He loved the young woman and spoke to her heart. 4Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as a wife.” 5Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah, but his sons were with his livestock in the field. Jacob kept silent until they came. 6Hamor, Shechem's father, went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7Jacob's sons came in from the field when they heard. The men were grieved and furious, because Shechem had committed an outrage in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter. Such a thing must not be done.
8Hamor spoke with them: “My son Shechem's heart is set on your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. 9Intermarry with us: give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. 10Settle among us. The land is before you: live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it.” 11Shechem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes. I will give whatever you ask me. 12Set the bride-price and gift as high as you like; I will give whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as a wife.” 13Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. 14They said to them, “We cannot do this thing, giving our sister to a man who has a foreskin. That would be a disgrace to us. 15Only on this condition will we agree with you: you must become like us by circumcising every male among you. 16Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We will settle among you and become one people. 17But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, we will take our daughter and go.”
18Their words pleased Hamor and Shechem son of Hamor. 19The young man did not delay in doing this, because he desired Jacob's daughter. He was more honored than anyone in his father's household. 20Hamor and his son Shechem came to their city's gate and spoke to the men of their city: 21“These men are peaceful toward us. Let them settle in the land and trade in it. Look, the land has room on both sides for them. Let us take their daughters as wives and give them our daughters. 22Only on this condition will the men agree to settle among us and become one people: every male among us must be circumcised, as they are circumcised. 23Will not their livestock, their property, and all their animals become ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will settle among us.” 24Everyone who went out through the city gate listened to Hamor and his son Shechem. Every male was circumcised, everyone who went out through the city gate.
25On the third day, while they were in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword. They entered the unsuspecting city and killed every male. 26They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, took Dinah from Shechem's house, and left. 27Jacob's sons came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28They took their flocks, their cattle, their donkeys, and everything in the city and in the fields. 29They captured and plundered all their wealth, all their little children, their wives, and everything in the houses. 30Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me stink among the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My people are few in number. They will gather against me and strike me down, and I and my household will be destroyed.” 31They said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”
