Genesis 27
1When Isaac had grown old and his eyes had dimmed so that he could not see, he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son!” He said to him, “Here I am.” 2He said, “Look, I have grown old. I do not know the day of my death. 3Now please take your equipment, your quiver and your bow, go out to the field, and hunt game for me. 4Make me the tasty food I love and bring it to me so that I may eat, so that my very self may bless you before I die.” 5Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to Esau his son. Esau went to the field to hunt game and bring it back. 6Rebekah said to Jacob her son, “Look, I heard your father speaking to Esau your brother, saying, 7‘Bring me game and make me tasty food so that I may eat and bless you before Yahweh before my death.’ 8Now, my son, listen to my voice in what I command you. 9Please go to the flock and take me two good young goats from there, and I will make them into the tasty food your father loves. 10You will bring it to your father, and he will eat, so that he may bless you before his death.”
11Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Look, Esau my brother is a hairy man, while I am a smooth man. 12Perhaps my father will feel me, and I will be in his eyes like someone mocking him. I will bring a curse on myself, not a blessing.” 13His mother said to him, “Your curse be upon me, my son. Only listen to my voice, and go get them for me.” 14He went, took them, and brought them to his mother, and his mother made the tasty food his father loved. 15Rebekah took the desirable clothes of Esau her older son, which she had with her in the house, and dressed Jacob her younger son in them. 16She dressed his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the skins of the young goats. 17She put the tasty food and the bread she had made into the hand of Jacob her son.
18He came to his father and said, “My father!” He said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” 19Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please rise, sit, and eat some of my game, so that your very self may bless me.” 20Isaac said to his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?” He said, “Because Yahweh your God brought it before me.” 21Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near so that I may feel you, my son, whether you really are my son Esau or not.” 22Jacob came near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are Esau's hands.” 23He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like the hands of Esau his brother, and he blessed him. 24He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He said, “I am.” 25He said, “Bring it near to me, and let me eat some of my son's game, so that my very self may bless you.” He brought it near to him, and he ate. He brought him wine, and he drank. 26Isaac his father said to him, “Please come near and kiss me, my son.” 27He came near and kissed him. He smelled the smell of his clothes and blessed him, saying, “Look, my son's smell is like the smell of a field that Yahweh has blessed. 28May God give you of heaven's dew and of the earth's rich places, and an abundance of grain and new wine. 29May peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be master over your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be those who curse you, and blessed be those who bless you.”
30As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had barely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31He too made tasty food and brought it to his father. He said to his father, “Let my father rise and eat some of his son's game, so that your very self may bless me.” 32Isaac his father said to him, “Who are you?” He said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.” 33Isaac trembled with exceedingly great trembling. He said, “Who then was the one who hunted game and brought it to me, so that I ate some of everything before you came and blessed him? Yes, he will be blessed!” 34When Esau heard his father's words, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me too, my father!” 35He said, “Your brother came with deceit and took your blessing.” 36He said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? He has supplanted me these two times. He took my birthright, and look, now he has taken my blessing!” He said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” 37Isaac answered Esau, “Look, I have made him master over you, and I have given him all his brothers as slaves. I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What then can I do for you, my son?” 38Esau said to his father, “Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Esau lifted his voice and wept. 39Isaac his father answered him, “Look, away from the earth's rich places will be your dwelling, and away from heaven's dew above. 40By your sword you will live, and you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will tear his yoke from your neck.”
41Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching. Then I will kill Jacob my brother.” 42Rebekah was told the words of Esau her older son. She sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, “Look, Esau your brother is consoling himself about you by planning to kill you. 43Now, my son, listen to my voice. Get up and flee to Laban my brother in Haran. 44Stay with him a few days, until your brother's fury turns back, 45until your brother's anger turns back from you and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?” 46Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am disgusted with my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth like these, from the daughters of the land, what use is life to me?”
