Exodus 35

1Moses assembled the whole congregation of the sons of Israel and said to them, “These are the things Yahweh has commanded you to do: 2For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is to be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of complete rest for Yahweh. Whoever does work on it is to be put to death. 3You must not kindle a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.”

4Moses said to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, “This is what Yahweh has commanded: 5Take from among yourselves a contribution to Yahweh. Everyone willing of heart is to bring it, Yahweh's contribution: gold, silver, and bronze; 6blue, purple, and crimson yarn, fine linen, and goats' hair; 7rams' skins dyed red, tahash skins, and acacia wood; 8oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense; 9onyx stones and stones for setting in the ephod and the breastpiece. 10Let everyone among you skilled of heart come and make everything Yahweh has commanded: 11the dwelling, its tent and its covering, its clasps and its frames, its bars, its pillars and its sockets; 12the ark and its poles, the atonement cover, and the screening veil; 13the table and its poles, all its utensils, and the bread of the Presence; 14the lampstand for the light, its utensils, its lamps, and the oil for the light; 15the incense altar and its poles, the anointing oil, the fragrant incense, and the entrance screen for the entrance of the dwelling; 16the altar of burnt offering and its bronze grating, its poles and all its utensils, the basin and its stand; 17the hangings of the courtyard, its pillars and its sockets, and the screen for the courtyard gate; 18the pegs of the dwelling, the pegs of the courtyard, and their cords; 19the service garments for serving in the holy place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and his sons' garments for priestly service.”

20The whole congregation of the sons of Israel went out from Moses' presence. 21Everyone whose heart lifted him, and everyone whose spirit moved him freely, came and brought Yahweh's contribution for the work of the tent of meeting, for all its service, and for the holy garments. 22The men came along with the women, everyone willing of heart. They brought brooches, earrings, rings, and armlets, every kind of gold article, everyone who presented a wave offering of gold to Yahweh. 23Everyone who had blue, purple, or crimson yarn, fine linen, goats' hair, rams' skins dyed red, or tahash skins brought them. 24Everyone making a contribution of silver or bronze brought Yahweh's contribution, and everyone who had acacia wood for any of the work of the service brought it. 25Every woman skilled of heart spun with her hands, and they brought what they had spun: blue, purple, and crimson yarn and fine linen. 26All the women whose hearts lifted them in skill spun the goats' hair. 27The leaders brought the onyx stones and the stones for setting in the ephod and the breastpiece, 28and the spices and the oil for the light, for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense. 29Every man and woman whose heart moved them freely to bring something for all the work Yahweh had commanded through Moses brought it. The sons of Israel brought a freewill offering to Yahweh.

30Moses said to the sons of Israel, “See, Yahweh has called by name Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 31He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, understanding, knowledge, and every kind of craftsmanship, 32to devise designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, 33in cutting stones for settings and in carving wood, to work in every kind of designed craftsmanship. 34He has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, a heart to teach. 35He has filled them with skill of heart to do every kind of work of a craftsman, a designer, an embroiderer in blue, purple, and crimson yarn and fine linen, and a weaver—workers in every kind of craftsmanship and devisers of designs.”

Translation notes 6

35:2–3 — Sabbath and fire. The work restriction and death sanction are retained as stated. The additional fire prohibition does not here explain every possible kind of fire use; the translation does not supply a complete later Sabbath-law system.

35:5–10 — Hearts and materials. Willingness and craftsmanship are both expressed through heart language, with different contextual senses. “Yarn” and “hair” clarify the materials implied by the color names and “goats.” Tahash skins and the onyx identification remain uncertain, as in chapter 25.

35:11–19 — Complete inventory. The list retains the dwelling and its overlying tent, the veil and entrance screen, the two altars, the lamps and lampstand, and the priestly garments as distinct items. “Screening veil” names the veil's separating function without making it the same furnishing as the entrance screen.

35:21–29 — Men and women. Both are explicitly involved in giving. Verses 25–26 specifically identify skilled women who spin with their hands, rather than leaving their contribution hidden inside a generic masculine description of workers. “Whose heart lifted” describes being stirred to act, not an independent claim to a new ritual office.

35:22 — Jewelry. Some ancient ornament names are uncertain; the familiar English names are provisional. The last item has also been understood as a different bodily ornament. The text does not specify its wearer or require an additional account of the jewelry's religious history.

35:30–35 — Skill and teaching. God-given ability includes designing, working with materials, and teaching. The Spirit of God is connected with practical craftsmanship; the text does not assign every craftsperson the same task or office.
