Deuteronomy 27

1Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, “Keep the whole command that I am commanding you today. 2On the day you cross the Jordan into the land Yahweh your God is giving you, set up large stones for yourself and coat them with plaster. 3Write on them all the words of this instruction when you cross over, so that you may enter the land Yahweh your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4When you cross the Jordan, set up these stones that I am commanding you about today on Mount Ebal, and coat them with plaster. 5Build there an altar to Yahweh your God, an altar of stones. Do not wield an iron tool over them. 6Build the altar of Yahweh your God with whole stones, and offer burnt offerings on it to Yahweh your God. 7Sacrifice peace offerings, eat there, and rejoice before Yahweh your God. 8Write all the words of this instruction on the stones very clearly.”

9Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying, “Be silent and listen, Israel. This day you have become a people belonging to Yahweh your God. 10Obey the voice of Yahweh your God and carry out his commands and his statutes that I am commanding you today.”

11On that day Moses commanded the people, saying, 12“When you cross the Jordan, these must stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. 13These must stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14The Levites must declare in a loud voice to every man of Israel:

15“‘Cursed is the man who makes a carved image or a cast image, something detestable to Yahweh, the work of a craftsman’s hands, and sets it up in secret.’ And all the people must answer, ‘Amen.’

16“‘Cursed is anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

17“‘Cursed is anyone who moves his neighbor’s boundary marker.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

18“‘Cursed is anyone who leads a blind person astray on the road.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

19“‘Cursed is anyone who perverts the justice due the resident foreigner, the fatherless child, or the widow.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

20“‘Cursed is anyone who lies with his father’s wife, for he has uncovered his father’s skirt.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

21“‘Cursed is anyone who lies with any animal.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

22“‘Cursed is anyone who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

23“‘Cursed is anyone who lies with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

24“‘Cursed is anyone who strikes down his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

25“‘Cursed is anyone who takes a bribe to strike down an innocent person.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’

26“‘Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this instruction by doing them.’ And all the people must say, ‘Amen.’”

Translation notes 5

27:3, 8 — This instruction. The Hebrew word is torah, which can mean instruction or law. The precise extent of the words to be inscribed is not specified here.

27:4 — Ebal or Gerizim. The received Jewish Hebrew text reads “Mount Ebal”; the Samaritan Torah reads “Mount Gerizim.” This is a significant textual difference tied to the place of the altar. The translation provisionally retains Ebal; neither community’s geographical preference by itself settles the history of the reading.

27:5–7 — The altar. Whole stones have not been cut with an iron tool. Burnt offerings and peace offerings are distinct sacrifices; the latter provide the meal eaten before Yahweh.

27:15–26 — Amen. Each curse receives the people’s stated agreement: “Amen,” or “So be it.” The repeated responses have been retained. “Lies with” is the sexual expression in verses 20–23.

27:20 — His father’s skirt. As in 22:30, the image describes violating the father’s marital claim by intercourse with his wife.
